Sleep deprivation affects our emotional regulation from "summary" of Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

Losing sleep is not just about feeling tired the next day; it can also impact our emotional well-being in profound ways. When we are sleep-deprived, our brain's ability to regulate emotions is compromised. This means that we may face difficulties in managing our feelings, leading to heightened emotional reactivity. The amygdala, a key player in our emotional responses, becomes overactive when we lack proper sleep. As a result, we may find ourselves reacting more strongly to negative stimuli and experiencing increased levels of anxiety, stress, and irritability. On the other hand, the prefrontal cortex, responsible for rational decision-making and impulse control, becomes less engaged when we are sleep-deprived. This imbalance between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex can lead to poor emotional regulation. Furthermore, sleep deprivation affects our ability to accurately interpret emotional cues from others. We may misread facial expressions, body language, and vocal tones, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts in our relationships. This can further fuel our emotional distress and make it even harder to regulate our feelings effectively.
  1. Sleep deprivation creates a perfect storm for emotional dysregulation. Our brains are thrown off balance, making it challenging to navigate the ups and downs of daily life. By prioritizing sleep and ensuring we get enough rest each night, we can better equip ourselves to handle the emotional challenges that come our way. After all, a well-rested mind is better equipped to face the emotional rollercoaster of life.
