Cognitive dissonance can prevent us from acknowledging our mistakes from "summary" of Why We Make Mistakes by Joseph T. Hallinan

In the face of cognitive dissonance, our minds have a tendency to protect our self-image by rationalizing our actions and denying any mistakes we may have made. This psychological phenomenon is a defense mechanism that allows us to maintain our sense of self-worth and consistency. When we are confronted with evidence that contradicts our beliefs or actions, we experience cognitive dissonance, which creates a state of mental discomfort. In order to alleviate this discomfort, we may engage in a process of mental gymnastics to justify our behavior and avoid admitting that we were wrong. This cognitive dissonance can be particularly strong when our mistakes are significant or have serious consequences. Admitting that we were wrong in these situations can be a blow to our ego and may lead to feelings of guilt, shame, or embarrassment. As a result, we may go to great lengths to avoid acknowledging our mistakes, even when the evidence is overwhelming. We may downplay the significance of our errors, shift the blame onto others, or simply ignore the facts in front of us. By failing to acknowledge our mistakes, we not only hinder our own personal growth and learning but also perpetuate a cycle of cognitive dissonance that can prevent us from making better decisions in the future. It is only by confronting our mistakes head-on and accepting responsibility for them that we can truly learn and grow from our experiences.
