The current digital economy exploits ordinary people's data for profit from "summary" of Who Owns the Future? by Jaron Lanier

In our digital economy, data is often referred to as the new gold. Companies accumulate vast amounts of personal information from ordinary people through their online activities, such as browsing, shopping, and socializing. This data is then used to target advertisements, customize services, and make profits. However, the individuals who generate this valuable data rarely see any direct benefits from it. This exploitation of personal data for profit has become a defining feature of the current digital economy. The more data a company can collect and analyze, the more power and wealth it can accumulate. This creates a lopsided economy where a small number of companies amass enormous wealth while the vast majority of people see little return for their contributions. The problem is not that companies are collecting data, but rather that the benefits of this data are not being equitably distributed. Ordinary people are essentially providing free labor by generating data for these companies, yet they are not being compensated for their contributions. This imbalance in the digital economy has led to a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few, while the rest of society struggles to make ends meet. As more aspects of our lives are digitized and monetized, the issue of data exploitation becomes even more pressing. Our personal information is constantly being harvested, analyzed, and sold without our knowledge or consent. This raises important questions about privacy, consent, and ownership in the digital age. In order to address these challenges, we need to rethink the way data is collected, used, and shared in our digital economy. We must ensure that individuals have more control over their personal information and receive fair compensation for the data they generate. By empowering people to take ownership of their data, we can create a more equitable and sustainable digital economy that benefits everyone, not just a select few.
