In the story, we see four characters faced with unexpected change in their environment. Two of them, Sniff and Scurry, immediately set out to find new cheese when they realize that their old cheese has been moved. They don't waste time analyzing the situation or feeling sorry for themselves. They take action right away because they understand that change is inevitable and waiting for things to go back to the way they were is pointless. On the other hand, Hem and Haw, the other two characters, are resistant to change. They are in denial and believe that the cheese will magically reappear if they just wait long enough.
