Mindfulness involves tuning into our senses from "summary" of Wherever You Go, There You are by John Hampel

When we practice mindfulness, we are essentially training our attention to be fully present in the moment. One way to do this is by tuning into our senses. Our senses are the gateways through which we experience the world around us, and by paying attention to them, we can bring ourselves into the present moment. By tuning into our senses, we become more aware of the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and physical sensations that are happening in the here and now. This can help to ground us in reality and prevent our minds from wandering off into the past or the future. For example, if we are eating a meal mindfully, we can pay attention to the colors, textures, and flavors of the food. We can savor each bite and be fully present with the experience of eating. This can not only enhance our enjoyment of the meal but also help us to cultivate a greater sense of gratitude for the nourishment it provides. Similarly, if we are out for a walk, we can tune into the sights and sounds of nature around us. We can notice the colors of the leaves, the sound of birds singing, and the feeling of the breeze on our skin. By immersing ourselves in the sensory experience of the walk, we can feel more connected to the world around us and more alive in the present moment.
  1. Tuning into our senses is a powerful way to anchor ourselves in the here and now. It can help us to let go of worries about the past or the future and simply be with whatever is unfolding in the present moment. Through this practice, we can cultivate a deeper sense of peace, clarity, and contentment in our lives.
