Regulators control the flow of conversation from "summary" of What Every BODY is Saying by Joe Navarro,Marvin Karlins

Regulators are those behaviors that we use to control the flow of conversation, much like a traffic cop controls the flow of traffic. They help us maintain the tempo, rhythm, and direction of our interactions. By regulating the flow of conversation, we can express our thoughts, emotions, and intentions more effectively. One common regulator is the head nod. When we nod our head, it signals agreement or understanding, encouraging the speaker to continue. On the other hand, shaking our head signals disagreement or confusion, which may prompt the speaker to clarify or change their message. By regulating our head movements, we can guide the conversation in a certain direction. Another important regulator is eye contact. Maintaining eye contact shows attentiveness and interest in the conversation, encouraging the speaker to share more. On the other hand, avoiding eye contact can signal discomfort or disinterest, potentially derailing the flow of conversation. By regulating our eye contact, we can signal our engagement and influence the course of the interaction. Gestures also serve as regulators in conversation. For example, open gestures like palms up can signal openness and receptiveness, encouraging the speaker to continue sharing. Conversely, closed gestures like folded arms can signal defensiveness or disagreement, potentially halting the flow of conversation. By regulating our gestures, we can convey our emotions and intentions more effectively.
  1. Regulators play a crucial role in controlling the flow of conversation. By being aware of and using these behaviors strategically, we can guide the interaction in a way that aligns with our goals and intentions. Whether we want to encourage more sharing, clarify a point, or express agreement, regulators help us navigate the complex landscape of communication.
