Addiction is a cunning and baffling disease from "summary" of Wasted by Marya Hornbacher

Addiction is a wild animal, cunning and baffling in its ways. It strikes when you least expect it, sinking its teeth into your skin before you even realize what's happening. It lures you in with promises of escape, of relief, of a temporary reprieve from the pain that haunts you. And just when you start to feel its hold on you loosen, it tightens its grip once more, pulling you back into its clutches with a force that leaves you breathless. There is a certain insidiousness to addiction, a way in which it creeps into your life without you even noticing. It starts small, a harmless indulgence here and there, a fleeting moment of pleasure that quickly turns into a desperate need for more. Before you know it, you're trapped in a cycle of craving and consumption, unable to break free no matter how hard you try. But what makes addiction truly baffling is the way it distorts your reality, clouding your judgment and convincing you that you don't have a problem. It whispers in your ear, telling you that you can stop whenever you want, that you're in control of your own destiny. And yet, despite your best efforts, you find yourself falling deeper and deeper into its clutches, unable to escape its siren song. In the world of addiction, nothing is as it seems. What once brought you pleasure now brings you pain, what once offered you solace now leaves you empty and hollow. You chase after that fleeting high, that momentary rush of euphoria, only to be left feeling more lost and alone than ever before. And so you find yourself trapped in a never-ending cycle of addiction, a prisoner of your own desires and impulses. You try to break free, to claw your way out of the darkness that surrounds you, but no matter how hard you try, you always seem to end up back where you started. Addiction is a cunning and baffling disease, a relentless foe that will stop at nothing to keep you under its control.
