Trauma can be transformed by accessing the body's innate resources from "summary" of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. Levine,Ph.D.
Trauma can be transformed by accessing the body's innate resources, which are our natural ability to heal and recover from overwhelming experiences. When we experience trauma, our bodies go into a state of high arousal, preparing us to fight, flee, or freeze in response to the threat. However, if we are unable to discharge this energy through physical action, it becomes trapped in our bodies, leading to symptoms of trauma such as anxiety, depression, and physical pain. By accessing the body's innate resources, we can help the trapped energy to be released and processed, allowing us to move beyond the trauma. This involves tuning into our bodily sensations and learning to listen to the messages they are sending us. Through techniques such as mindfulness, breathwork, and somatic experiencing, we can begin to reconnect with our bodies and access the wisdom they hold. One of the key aspects of transforming trauma is learning to regulate our nervous system, which may be stuck in a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal following a traumatic experience. By practicing techniques that help us to modulate our arousal levels, such as grounding exercises and self-soothing techniques, we can begin to restore a sense of safety and stability in our bodies. In addition to regulating our nervous system, it is important to build a sense of resilience and empowerment in order to heal from trauma. This involves cultivating a sense of agency and self-efficacy, as well as developing healthy coping strategies and boundaries. By accessing our innate resources, we can begin to shift from a state of helplessness and victimhood to one of empowerment and self-mastery.- By harnessing the body's innate resources and learning to work with our natural healing mechanisms, we can transform trauma and move towards a state of wholeness and well-being. It is through reconnecting with our bodies and accessing the wisdom they hold that we can truly heal from the effects of trauma and reclaim our lives.
