Reconnecting with the body can help heal emotional wounds from "summary" of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. Levine,Ph.D.
When we experience trauma, our bodies go into survival mode, activating the fight, flight, or freeze response. This is a natural and necessary reaction to danger, allowing us to protect ourselves in the moment. However, when the trauma is over, our bodies can get stuck in this heightened state of arousal, unable to return to a state of relaxation. This can lead to the manifestation of physical symptoms such as tension, pain, and illness, as well as emotional symptoms like anxiety, depression, and numbness. In order to heal from trauma, it is essential to reconnect with our bodies and release the stored energy from the original traumatic event. By tuning into our bodily sensations and allowing ourselves to fully experience them, we can discharge this pent-up energy and restore a sense of balance and calm. This process involves developing a greater awareness of our physical sensations, learning to listen to what our bodies are telling us, and responding with compassion and patience. When we reconnect with our bodies in this way, we can begin to process and integrate the traumatic memories that have been stored in our nervous systems. By allowing ourselves to fully experience these sensations without judgment or resistance, we can gradually release the hold that trauma has on us and move towards a state of healing and wholeness. This process can be challenging and uncomfortable at times, as we may encounter intense emotions and physical sensations. However, by staying present and grounded in our bodies, we can gradually work through these feelings and begin to release the grip of trauma on our lives.- Reconnecting with the body is a crucial step in the healing journey, as it allows us to access the innate wisdom and resilience of our nervous systems. By listening to the messages of our bodies and honoring our physical experiences, we can begin to unravel the knots of trauma and move towards a greater sense of peace and well-being. Through this process, we can learn to trust in the healing capacity of our bodies and cultivate a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and the world around us.
