Utilizing all senses improves memory encoding from "summary" of Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley

When we engage all of our senses in the process of learning and memorizing information, we create a more robust memory encoding. This means that when we involve not just our visual or auditory senses, but also our sense of touch, taste, and smell, we are more likely to remember the information in the long term. By activating multiple senses, we create more connections in our brains to the information we are trying to remember. For example, if we are learning a new language, we can associate the sight of the words with the sound of the words, the feel of writing them out, and even the taste or smell of foods from that culture. This multi-sensory approach creates a richer and more detailed memory trace. When we rely solely on one or two senses, we limit the amount of information that is being encoded in our brains. This is why simply reading or listening to information may not be as effective for memory as incorporating other senses. By engaging all of our senses, we give our brains more opportunities to make connections and associations with the information. Incorporating all of our senses in the learning process also makes the information more vivid and memorable. Think about a time when you smelled a certain scent and it brought back a flood of memories from your past. Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory, and by utilizing it in our learning process, we can create strong associations that will help us remember the information more easily.
  1. When we involve all of our senses in the process of learning and memorizing information, we create a more comprehensive and lasting memory encoding. This multi-sensory approach allows us to make stronger connections in our brains and create more vivid and memorable associations with the information we are trying to remember.
