Take breaks and rest your eyes to prevent fatigue from "summary" of Triple Your Reading Speed by Wade E. Cutler
Fatigue is a common enemy of effective reading. When we push ourselves to read for long periods without taking breaks, our eyes become tired and our concentration starts to wane. This can lead to a decrease in reading speed and comprehension. In order to prevent fatigue from setting in, it is important to take regular breaks and rest our eyes. One effective technique for preventing fatigue is the 20-20-20 rule. This rule suggests that for every 20 minutes of reading, we should take a 20-second break and focus our eyes on an object that is at least 20 feet away. By doing this, we give our eyes a chance to rest and refocus, reducing the strain that can lead to fatigue. Another helpful technique is to practice the habit of blinking regularly while reading. Blinking helps to lubricate the eyes and prevent them from becoming dry and tired. Additionally, it is important to maintain good posture while reading, as slouching or leaning too close to the text can put strain on the eyes and lead to fatigue. In addition to taking breaks and resting our eyes, it is important to ensure that we are reading in a well-lit environment. Poor lighting can cause unnecessary strain on the eyes, making it more difficult to focus and increasing the likelihood of fatigue. By reading in a well-lit area, we can reduce eye strain and improve our overall reading experience.- By incorporating these simple strategies into our reading routine, we can prevent fatigue and maintain a high level of reading speed and comprehension. Taking breaks, resting our eyes, blinking regularly, maintaining good posture, and reading in a well-lit environment are all essential practices for ensuring that we are able to read effectively and efficiently.
