When something traumatic happens, like a car accident or physical assault, our nervous system goes into overdrive. It's like an alarm system that can't turn off, constantly on high alert. This dysregulation can lead to a whole host of physical and emotional symptoms, from anxiety and depression to chronic pain and digestive issues. Our nervous system is made up of two main parts: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic system is like the gas pedal, revving us up for fight or flight.
