Trauma disrupts the body's natural balance from "summary" of Trauma is Really Strange by Steve Haines

When we experience trauma, whether it be physical or emotional, our body's natural balance is thrown off-kilter. This disruption can manifest in a variety of ways, from physical symptoms like headaches and muscle tension to emotional symptoms like anxiety and depression. The body essentially goes into survival mode, reacting as though it is still in danger even when the threat has passed. This chronic state of hyperarousal can wreak havoc on our nervous system, leading to a cascade of physiological responses that can be difficult to control. Our sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the fight-or-flight response, becomes overactive, flooding our body with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This constant state of alert can leave us feeling exhausted, on edge, and unable to relax. In contrast, our parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest and relaxation, may become underactive. This imbalance can further exacerbate feelings of anxiety and tension, making it difficult for us to calm down and feel safe. Our body is essentially stuck in a loop of heightened arousal, unable to return to a state of equilibrium. The disruption of our body's natural balance can also affect our immune system, making us more susceptible to illness and disease. Chronic stress and trauma can weaken our immune response, leaving us vulnerable to a host of health problems. Additionally, the impact of trauma on our mental health can be profound, leading to conditions like PTSD, depression, and anxiety disorders.
  1. Trauma disrupts not only our physical and emotional well-being but also our sense of self and connection to others. It can leave us feeling isolated, detached, and unable to trust, making it difficult to form and maintain healthy relationships. Healing from trauma requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the underlying imbalances in the body and mind, helping us regain a sense of safety, stability, and resilience.
