Somatic experiencing can release trapped emotions from "summary" of Trauma and Memory by Peter A. Levine,Ph.D.
When we experience trauma, our bodies often become stuck in a state of fight, flight, or freeze. These survival responses can cause emotions to become trapped within our bodies. Somatic experiencing is a process that aims to release these trapped emotions by engaging with the body's sensations and movements. By tuning into the physical sensations that arise in response to traumatic memories, individuals can begin to slowly discharge the pent-up energy that has been stored in their bodies. This process is guided by a trained somatic experiencing practitioner who helps the individual stay present with their bodily sensations without becoming overwhelmed by them. As the trapped emotions are gradually released through somatic experiencing, individuals may experience a sense of relief and a decrease in the intensity of their emotional responses to traumatic memories. This process allows for the integration of the traumatic experience on a physical and emotional level, leading to a greater sense of wholeness and well-being. Through somatic experiencing, individuals learn to trust their body's innate ability to heal from trauma. By connecting with their bodily sensations and allowing the trapped emotions to be released, individuals can move towards a state of greater resilience and self-regulation in the face of future challenges.- Somatic experiencing offers a unique and effective approach to healing trauma by addressing the physical manifestations of emotional pain. By engaging with the body's wisdom and resilience, individuals can begin to release the trapped emotions that have been holding them back and move towards a more integrated and empowered sense of self.
