Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer who lived in the second century AD, put forward a theory that gained widespread acceptance and held sway for over a thousand years. His geocentric model of the universe placed the Earth at the center, with the planets and stars revolving around it in perfect circles. Ptolemy's model was based on the idea that celestial bodies moved in circles, known as deferents, with smaller circles, called epicycles, superimposed on them. This complex system was able to predict the positions of the planets and stars with a reasonable degree of accuracy, and it became the standard explanation for the movements of celestial bodies for centuries to come.
