In other words, planets that are farther from the sun take longer to complete an orbit than those that are closer. Kepler's laws of planetary motion represented a significant departure from the geocentric model of the universe that had dominated scientific thought for centuries. By demonstrating that planets move in elliptical orbits around the sun and establishing precise relationships between a planet's speed, distance, and orbital period, Kepler laid the groundwork for Isaac Newton's later work on universal gravitation. Through his meticulous observations and mathematical analyses, Kepler fundamentally altered our understanding of the cosmos and paved the way for the scientific revolution that would follow.
