The intellect distorts our understanding of time from "summary" of Time and Free Will (Annotated Edition) by Henri Bergson

The intellect, which is accustomed to regards things as distinct and separate entities, tends to distort our understanding of time. It breaks down time into discrete moments and treats them as static points, failing to grasp the true nature of time as a continuous and flowing phenomenon. This fragmentation of time into isolated units leads to a distorted perception of reality, as we are unable to appreciate the fluidity and interconnectedness of events. By imposing a rigid structure on time, the intellect creates artificial boundaries that confine our experience within fixed parameters. This limited perspective restricts our ability to fully engage with the dynamic unfolding of life, as we become trapped in a linear framework that does not capture the richness and complexity of existence. As a result, we are unable to embrace the fullness of the present moment, constantly living in the past or future instead of fully immersing ourselves in the here and now. Moreover, the intellect's tendency to analyze and categorize time further distorts our understanding of its true essence. By attempting to measure and quantify time, we reduce it to a mere abstraction that fails to encompass its true depth and meaning. This reductionist approach deprives us of the vital connection we could have with time, preventing us from experiencing its full vitality and significance. In order to overcome this distortion caused by the intellect, we must transcend our limited conceptual framework and embrace a more intuitive and holistic understanding of time. By cultivating a deeper awareness of the interconnectedness of all things and recognizing the fluid nature of time, we can free ourselves from the constraints of the intellect and open ourselves to a more profound and authentic experience of reality. Only then can we truly appreciate the richness and beauty of the ever-changing tapestry of time that surrounds us.
