Capitalism thrives on perpetual growth from "summary" of This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein

In our current economic system, growth is not simply a desirable outcome, it is an absolute necessity. Capitalism requires constant expansion in order to function properly. This drive for growth is embedded in the DNA of the system, shaping everything from our political priorities to our cultural values. The logic of perpetual growth is so deeply ingrained in our society that it is often taken for granted. We are told that economic growth is essential for job creation, poverty alleviation, and overall well-being. But what we are not told is that this growth comes at a high cost – to the environment, to social stability, and to future generations. The pursuit of endless growth has led to the exploitation of natural resources on a massive scale. Fossil fuels, forests, water – all have been commodified and consumed at an unsustainable rate. This has resulted in widespread environmental degradation, from climate change to deforestation to water scarcity. Moreover, the relentless drive for growth has exacerbated inequality and social injustice. The benefits of economic expansion are not shared equitably, with the wealthy few reaping the lion's share of the rewards while the rest struggle to make ends meet. This has created a world where a tiny elite holds disproportionate power and wealth, while the majority are left behind. In order to break free from this destructive cycle, we must challenge the assumption that growth is always good. We must question the underlying principles of capitalism that prioritize profit over people and the planet. We must imagine a different way of organizing our economy, one that values sustainability, equity, and well-being over endless expansion. It is only by redefining our relationship with growth that we can hope to address the interconnected crises of climate change, inequality, and environmental degradation. We must be willing to confront the limitations of capitalism and explore alternative models that prioritize the long-term health of our planet and our communities. Only then can we truly change everything.
