Methods shape our understanding of the world from "summary" of Thinking Through Methods by John Levi Martin

Methods are not simply tools that we use to uncover truths about the world; they actively shape our understanding of reality. By choosing a particular method to investigate a phenomenon, we are also choosing a particular lens through which to view that phenomenon. This lens, in turn, influences the way we interpret the data we collect and the conclusions we draw from it. Different methods come with their own sets of assumptions, biases, and limitations. For example, a quantitative method that relies on statistical analysis may prioritize objectivity and generalizability, but it may also overlook the nuances and complexities of individual experiences. On the other hand, a qualitative method that focuses on in-depth interviews and observation may capture the richness of human experience, but it may also be subject to researcher bias and lack of generalizability. Moreover, the choice of method is often determined by larger social, political, and historical factors. For instance, certain methods may be privileged or marginalized based on the prevailing norms and values of a particular society. This can lead to the exclusion of alternative perspectives and ways of knowing, limiting the range of knowledge that is considered valid or legitimate.
  1. Methods not only shape our understanding of the world but also reflect and reproduce existing power dynamics and inequalities. By critically examining the methods we use in our research, we can become more aware of the ways in which they influence our knowledge production and contribute to the construction of social reality. Ultimately, thinking through methods allows us to interrogate the taken-for-granted assumptions that underlie our research practices and opens up new possibilities for understanding the world in more nuanced and inclusive ways.
