Interconnected systems can exhibit unexpected behaviors from "summary" of Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows

Interconnected systems, such as the various components of an ecosystem or a social network, often display behaviors that are not immediately apparent or predictable when looking at each individual part in isolation. This is due to the complex web of relationships and feedback loops that exist between these components, creating a dynamic and often non-linear system that can produce surprising outcomes. When we think in terms of systems, we must consider the interactions and dependencies between the different elements that make up the system. Changes in one part of the system can have ripple effects that impact other parts in ways that may not be immediately obvious. For example, a small change in the population size of a particular species within an ecosystem can lead to a chain reaction that ultimately affects the entire ecosystem. Furthermore, systems are often characterized by feedback loops, where the outputs of a system are fed back into the system as inputs, influencing future behavior. These feedback loops can either be reinforcing, leading to exponential growth or collapse, or balancing, helping to stabilize the syst...
