Focus on longterm results, not short-term wins from "summary" of Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

When we focus on short-term wins, we are often tempted to make decisions that provide immediate gratification but may not be in our best long-term interests. This short-term thinking can lead us to take unnecessary risks or overlook potential consequences that could harm us in the future. By shifting our focus to long-term results, we can make more informed and strategic decisions that consider the bigger picture and account for potential risks and rewards over time. When we prioritize long-term results, we are able to think more critically about the choices we make and the potential outcomes they may have. We are less likely to be swayed by the allure of quick successes or immediate gains, and more inclined to consider the lasting impact of our decisions on our overall goals and objectives. By taking a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to decision-making, we can increase our chances of achieving sustainable success and avoiding unnecessary setbacks. Focusing on long-term results requires us to adopt a more patient and disciplined mindset. We must be willing to forego short-term gratification in favor of long-term success, even if it means enduring temporary setbacks or delays along the way. This requires a certain level of self-control and resilience, as well as a willingness to accept that progress may not always be linear and that setbacks are a natural part of the journey towards achieving our goals. In order to focus on long-term results, we must also be willing to embrace uncertainty and accept that not all outcomes are within our control. We must be prepared to adapt and adjust our strategies as new information becomes available and be willing to learn from our mistakes and failures. By taking a more flexible and open-minded approach to decision-making, we can increase our chances of achieving our long-term goals and overcoming obstacles that may arise along the way.
  1. By focusing on long-term results rather than short-term wins, we can make better decisions that align with our broader objectives and increase our chances of long-term success. By adopting a more strategic and forward-thinking approach to decision-making, we can position ourselves for sustainable growth and resilience in the face of uncertainty and adversity.
