Our mind is a comfortable home for System 1 but System 2 is lazy from "summary" of Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
System 1, your automatic thinking system, is always running in the background, ready to jump in whenever needed. It is quick, efficient, and relies on heuristics to make snap judgments without much effort. System 1 feels right at home in your mind, effortlessly processing information and making decisions based on intuition and past experiences. On the other hand, System 2, your more deliberate and analytical thinking system, is lazy by nature. It requires effort and mental energy to engage System 2, as it is slower and more deliberate in its processing. Unlike System 1, System 2 does not feel as comfortable in your mind and prefers to avoid exerting unnecessary effort whenever possible. When faced with a problem or decision, your mind will default to System 1, as it is the path of least resistance. System 1 will provide quick answers and solutions based on intuition and emotion, saving you time and mental energy. However, this reliance on System 1 can lead to errors in judgment and decision-making, as it is prone to biases and heuristics that may not always align with logic and reason. To engage System 2 and ensure more accurate and thoughtful decision-making, you must be willing to put in the effort required to override the automatic responses of System 1. This means taking the time to slow down, carefully consider all available information, and critically evaluate your initial instincts before making a final decision.- You can learn to harness the strengths of both systems while mitigating their respective weaknesses. This awareness allows you to make more informed and rational decisions, ultimately leading to better outcomes in various aspects of your life.
