Stay open to new information from "summary" of Think Again by Adam Grant

To think like a scientist, we need to be willing to revise our beliefs in the face of new evidence. This requires a certain level of humility - the recognition that we don't know everything and that we can always learn more. It also requires intellectual curiosity, a willingness to seek out new information and perspectives that may challenge our existing views. When we stay open to new information, we are able to avoid the trap of confirmation bias - the tendency to seek out information that confirms what we already believe and ignore or discount information that contradicts it. By actively seeking out diverse viewpoints and considering evidence that may run counter to our beliefs, we can make more informed decisions and avoid falling victim to cognitive blind spots. Being open to new information also requires a certain level of cognitive flexibility. We need to be willing to entertain the possibility that we may be wrong and be open to changing our minds in the face of compelling evidence. This can be uncomfortable, especially if it means admitting that we were mistaken, but it is essential for intellectual growth and learning.
  1. Staying open to new information is a mindset - a willingness to engage with the world with curiosity and humility, to be open to learning and growing, and to constantly challenge and refine our beliefs in the pursuit of truth. By adopting this mindset, we can become more effective critical thinkers, better decision-makers, and more intellectually curious and open-minded individuals.
