Evolutionary Theory influences Social Behavior from "summary" of Theory of the Leisure Class by Thorstein Veblen
The Evolutionary Theory holds that the behavior of man, in common with that of all other animals, is the result of a process of natural selection. This theory postulates that the traits which have been handed down from one generation to the next are those which have proved advantageous for the survival and reproduction of the species. Social behavior, therefore, is seen as a product of this evolutionary process. The influences of this theory on social behavior are profound and far-reaching. It is argued that the customs, institutions, and beliefs of society have all been shaped by the evolutionary forces that have acted upon our ancestors. This means that the way in which we interact with one another, the values we hold dear, and the norms we adhere to are all products of our evolutionary past. For example, the concept of status, hierarchy, and social class can all be traced back to the evolutionary imperative to compete for resources and mates. Those who are able to display their wealth and power are more likely to attract mates and pass on their genes to the next generation. Similarly, the division of labor in society can be understood in terms of evolutionary theory. Different individuals have different skills and abilities, which have been honed over generations in response to the demands of the environment. This division of labor is essential for the functioning of society and is a direct result of our evolutionary past.- The Evolutionary Theory has a profound influence on social behavior. It provides a framework for understanding the customs, institutions, and beliefs of society in terms of their evolutionary origins. By recognizing the role of evolution in shaping social behavior, we can gain a deeper insight into the complex web of interactions that make up human society.
