Let go of fear and resistance to death from "summary" of The Zen of Living and Dying by Philip Kapleau

Fear and resistance to death are natural reactions that many of us experience when faced with the idea of our own mortality. We may cling to life, desperately trying to avoid the inevitable end that awaits us all. However, Zen teachings encourage us to let go of these fears and accept death as a natural part of life. By releasing our fear and resistance to death, we can find a sense of peace and acceptance that transcends our physical existence. Instead of viewing death as something to be feared, we can see it as a natural and inevitable process that is simply a part of the cycle of life. This shift in perspective allows us to approach death with a sense of calm and equanimity, rather than with anxiety and dread. In Zen practice, we are encouraged to cultivate a sense of mindfulness and presence in each moment, recognizing the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death. By embracing this truth, we can let go of our attachment to the idea of a permanent self and instead focus on living fully in the present moment. Through practices such as meditation and contemplation, we can come to see that death is not something to be feared, but rather an opportunity for transformation and renewal. Just as the seasons change and the cycle of life continues, so too does death offer us the chance to let go of our attachments and embrace the unknown with openness and curiosity.
  1. By letting go of fear and resistance to death, we can find a profound sense of liberation and freedom. We can live our lives more fully and authentically, knowing that death is simply a part of the journey that we are all on. In this way, we can approach our own mortality with grace and acceptance, finding peace in the knowledge that death is not the end, but rather a new beginning.
