Impermanence is a fundamental truth of life. Everything is subject to change, nothing lasts forever. This reality can be unsettling, even frightening, for many people. We cling to things, to people, to situations, desperately trying to hold on to what we have, to what we know. But this clinging only causes suffering. It brings anxiety, fear, and ultimately, disappointment. In Zen practice, we are encouraged to embrace impermanence, to accept it as a natural part of life. This does not mean that we should resign ourselves to a passive acceptance of change, but rather that we should find peace in the knowledge that everything is in a constant state of flux.
