Ancient structures succumb to nature from "summary" of The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

Throughout the passage of time, ancient structures have always had a battle with nature. From the towering pyramids of Egypt to the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu, these architectural wonders have faced the relentless forces of wind, rain, and vegetation. As humans cease to exist, these structures are left vulnerable to the whims of nature, slowly succumbing to its overpowering might. In the absence of human intervention, plants and trees begin to take root within the cracks and crevices of these ancient structures. Their roots dig deep, causing the once solid foundations to crack and crumble. Over time, the weight of vegetation becomes too much for the weakened structures to bear, leading to their eventual collapse. As the elements continue to wear away at these ancient monuments, erosion sets in, gradually eating away at their surfaces. Wind and rain carry away tiny particles of stone, leaving behind a weathered and worn facade. Without regular maintenance and upkeep, these structures are unable to withstand the relentless assault of nature. In addition to physical decay, the absence of humans also leads to the proliferation of animals within these ancient sites. Birds make nests in the nooks and crannies of the ruins, while small mammals seek shelter within their crumbling walls. Their presence further accelerates the degradation of these once grand structures, as their activities contribute to the overall deterioration of the sites.
  1. As time marches on and nature continues its relentless onslaught, these ancient structures are transformed from symbols of human ingenuity and craftsmanship to mere remnants of a bygone era. The cycle of decay and renewal perpetuates itself, reminding us of the impermanence of all things in the face of nature's unyielding power.
