In the aftermath of World War II, the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, along with Ukraine, found themselves under Soviet occupation. The Soviet Union asserted control over these territories, imposing communist rule and suppressing any form of resistance. The Baltic states had been independent nations before the war, but were forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union as part of Stalin's expansionist policies. Ukraine, on the other hand, had a long history of struggle for independence, but was ultimately subjugated by the Soviet Union.
