For instance, waves can be classified as mechanical or electromagnetic, depending on whether they require a medium to propagate. Mechanical waves, such as sound waves or water waves, rely on the medium's particles to transmit energy. On the other hand, electromagnetic waves, like light or radio waves, can travel through a vacuum since they consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields. Furthermore, waves can be categorized based on their direction of oscillation relative to the direction of energy transfer. Transverse waves exhibit oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation, like the motion of a rope when a wave is passed along it. In contrast, longitudinal waves have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer, such as the compression and rarefaction of air molecules in a sound wave.
