Europe experienced the Renaissance and Reformation from "summary" of The Story of Mankind, Original Edition (Yesterday's Classics) by Hendrik Willem Van Loon

During the Middle Ages, Europe was a dark and turbulent place. Ignorance and superstition reigned supreme, and people lived in fear of the unknown. But in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a great change began to take place. This period of rebirth and awakening is known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a time of great intellectual and artistic achievement. Scholars rediscovered the works of ancient Greek and Roman writers, and began to study them with a new sense of curiosity and wonder. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo created masterpieces that still inspire us today. At the same time, a religious revolution was sweeping across Europe. This movement, known as the Reformation, challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and called for a return to the teachings of the Bible. Reformers like Martin Luther and John Calvin spoke out against corruption and injustice in the Church, and called for a more personal relationship with God. The Renaissance and Reformation were closely linked, as the spirit of inquiry and discovery that characterized the Renaissance also fueled the desire for religious reform. Together, these movements changed the course of European history and laid the foundations for the modern world.
