It was a long and arduous journey undertaken by the Red Army in order to escape the encroaching forces of the Nationalist Kuomintang. The decision to embark on this march was not taken lightly, but was seen as a necessary strategic retreat in order to regroup and survive in the face of overwhelming opposition. The Long March began in October 1934, when the Red Army, led by Mao Zedong, started their trek from Jiangxi province in southern China.
