The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line. Since emancipation, the freedmen have worked, believed, hoped, and struggled; and they have the right to do all this without hindrance or discouragement. But the aftermath of emancipation has not been all sunshine and roses. It was a momentous time when the black man emerged from slavery to freedom, but the transition was not smooth. With emancipation came new challenges. The freedmen faced poverty, illiteracy, and discrimination. The promise of freedom was often met with hostility and violence. The Civil War may have ended, but the battle for equality was far from over. The freedmen were left to fend for themselves in a world that still saw them as inferior.
