They demonstrate unique personalities from "summary" of The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery

Each octopus I've met has possessed its own unique personality. For example, Kali, a giant Pacific octopus, was playful and curious, always eager to interact with me during our encounters at the New England Aquarium. In contrast, Octavia, a smaller Caribbean reef octopus, demonstrated shyness and wariness, preferring to observe from a distance rather than engage directly. Their individual traits were evident in their behaviors and interactions with me and others. Kali's boldness was displayed through her willingness to reach out and touch me with her tentacles, while Octavia's caution could be seen in her quick retreats whenever I approached her tank. These distinct personalities made each octopus a fascinating and complex creature to observe and study. Despite their differences, all the octopuses I encountered shared a common intelligence and curiosity about their surroundings. From opening jars to solve puzzles to rearranging their tanks to suit their preferences, these animals constantly displayed their cleverness and adaptability. It was clear that they were not simply instinct-driven creatures but rather thinking beings capable of understanding and responding to their environments in unique ways. By taking the time to observe and appreciate the individual personalities of octopuses, I gained a deeper understanding of these incredible creatures and the complexity of their inner lives. Each interaction with an octopus revealed new insights and challenged my preconceived notions about these animals. Through these encounters, I came to appreciate the depth and richness of their personalities and the bond that can form between human and octopus based on mutual respect and curiosity.
