We are more likely to help others when we feel a connection to them from "summary" of The Social Animal by Elliot Aronson

The human heart is a complex organ, capable of both great love and great indifference. When it comes to helping others, our connection to them plays a crucial role in determining our actions. We are more likely to lend a hand to those we feel a sense of kinship with, whether it be through shared experiences, values, or beliefs. This connection acts as a bridge, allowing empathy and compassion to flow freely between individuals. Think of a time when you saw someone in need and felt an instant pull to assist them. Chances are, that person reminded you of yourself or someone close to you. This feeling of familiarity triggers our innate desire to help, as we see a reflection of our own humanity in those around us. This connection serves as a powerful motivator, compelling us to act in ways that benefit not only others but ourselves as well. In contrast, when we encounter someone who feels like a stranger, our willingness to help may dwindle. Without a sense of connection, it becomes easier to turn a blind eye to their struggles or hardships. We may justify our inaction by telling ourselves that their problems are not our responsibility, or that we have more pressing concerns to attend to. In essence, the absence of a bond weakens the ties that bind us together as a community. However, this is not to say that we are incapable of helping those we do not know personally. In certain situations, such as natural disasters or humanitarian crises, our sense of shared humanity can transcend individual connections. We may feel compelled to offer assistance simply because we recognize the basic dignity and worth of every human being. In these moments, our capacity for empathy extends beyond familiar faces to encompass all those in need.
  1. Our ability to help others hinges on the strength of our connections to them. Whether through shared experiences, values, or a common humanity, these bonds shape our perceptions and guide our actions. By nurturing these connections and fostering a sense of empathy, we can create a more compassionate and caring society where helping others is not just a choice, but a natural extension of who we are as social beings.
