Inequality from "summary" of The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein

In the world of disaster capitalism, inequality is not just a side effect – it is a deliberate strategy. It is used as a tool to exploit vulnerable populations during times of crisis, when people are too overwhelmed to resist. When a society is in shock, the rich and powerful take advantage of the chaos to further consolidate their wealth and power. This is not a new phenomenon; it has been happening for decades, if not centuries. One of the key tactics used to perpetuate inequality in this way is the imposition of harsh austerity measures. These measures are often presented as necessary in order to "fix" the economy, but in reality, they serve to further enrich the already wealthy at the expense of the poor and working class. By cutting social services, privatizing public assets, and deregulating industries, the elite are able to increase their profits while ordinary people suffer. Another way in which inequality is perpetuated in the shock doctrine is through the exploitation of natural disasters. When a hurricane, earthquake, or other catastrophe strikes, the wealthy and powerful swoop in to "rebuild" the affected areas in a way that benefits themselves, often at the expense of the local population. This process of disaster capitalism not only exacerbates existing inequalities, but also creates new ones, as the most vulnerable are left even more destitute than before. In order to break free from this cycle of inequality, we must first recognize it for what it is – a deliberate strategy to enrich the few at the expense of the many. We must resist the narrative that austerity and privatization are the only solutions to our problems, and instead work towards creating a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Only then can we truly begin to address the root causes of inequality and build a more just and sustainable future for all.
