In the complex web of life that is the natural world, balance is not just a nice ideal but a fundamental necessity. It is a delicate dance between predator and prey, between producers and consumers, between all the organisms that make up an ecosystem. When this balance is upset, the consequences can be catastrophic. Take the example of the sea otters in the kelp forests off the coast of California. These charismatic creatures were once hunted to near extinction for their fur, and as a result, the population of sea urchins - their favorite prey - exploded. With no natural predators to keep their numbers in check, the urchins decimated the kelp forests, turning them into barren wastelands. But when conservationists stepped in and reintroduced sea otters to the area, the balance was restored. The otters began to prey on the urchins, allowing the kelp forests to regenerate and once again support a diverse array of marine life.
