Star clusters contain numerous stars from "summary" of The Secret World of Stargazing by Adrian West

Star clusters are fascinating structures in the night sky that contain a multitude of stars. These clusters come in various sizes, ranging from a handful of stars to thousands or even millions packed closely together. The stars within a cluster are bound together by gravity, forming a cohesive unit that moves through space as a single entity. One type of star cluster is known as an open cluster, which typically consists of young stars that formed from the same molecular cloud. These clusters are relatively loose in structure, with stars spread out over a large area. Open clusters are often found in the spiral arms of galaxies like our Milky Way, where new stars are actively being born. On the other hand, globular clusters are much more densely packed groups of stars that are much older than their open cluster counterparts. These clusters contain hundreds of thousands to millions of stars, all held together in a tight ball by their collective gravitational pull. Globular clusters are found in the outskirts of galaxies, orbiting around the galactic center in a spherical halo. Regardless of their size or age, star clusters offer a unique opportunity for astronomers to study the properties and evolution of multiple stars at once. By observing the behavior of stars within a cluster, scientists can gain insights into the formation and development of stars over time. Studying star clusters also helps astronomers understand the dynamics of galaxies and the larger structures of the universe.
  1. Star clusters serve as natural laboratories for exploring the mysteries of the cosmos, providing a wealth of information about the nature of stars and their interactions within a clustered environment. As we gaze up at the night sky and marvel at these luminous gatherings of stars, we are reminded of the vastness and complexity of the universe that surrounds us.
