Lily learns about the civil rights movement and the fight for equality from "summary" of The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

In the summer of 1964, Lily Owens, a young girl living in South Carolina, embarks on a journey that will forever change her perspective on the world around her. Raised by an abusive father and haunted by the memory of her mother's death, Lily finds solace in the company of Rosaleen, her African-American housekeeper and friend. When Rosaleen is arrested for standing up to a group of racist men, Lily decides to run away with her to Tiburon, a town she believes holds the key to her mother's past. In Tiburon, Lily and Rosaleen find refuge with the Boatwright sisters - August, June, and May - who welcome them into their vibrant and unconventional household. As Lily settles into life at the pink house, she learns about the civil rights movement and the fight for equality that is sweeping the nation. Through her interactions with the Boatwright sisters and the townspeople of Tiburon, Lily begins to understand the deep-seated prejudices and injustices that have plagued the country for generations. August Boatwright, a wise and compassionate woman, becomes a mentor to Lily, teaching her about the importance of standing up for what is right and speaking out against injustice. Lily is inspired by August's unwavering commitment to equality and justice, and she begins to find her own voice in the fight for civil rights. Through her experiences in Tiburon, Lily comes to realize that true change begins with individuals who are willing to challenge the status quo and work towards a more just and equitable society. As she witnesses the bravery and determination of those around her, Lily is inspired to do her part in the fight for equality, knowing that every small act of resistance can make a difference in the larger struggle for justice.
