Adrian's home life is in disarray from "summary" of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3⁄4 by Sue Townsend

Adrian's parents are constantly arguing, and their fights often end with his father threatening to leave. The tension at home is palpable, and Adrian struggles to cope with the stress it brings.
