Woman's existence is mediated by man from "summary" of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir

In a world where men have historically held positions of power and privilege, women have often found themselves in a subordinate position. This power dynamic has not only shaped societal structures but has also influenced the way in which women perceive themselves and their own worth. Throughout history, women have been defined in relation to men, their existence dependent on the approval and validation of the opposite sex. This dependence on men has led to the objectification and commodification of women, reducing them to mere objects to be possessed and controlled. Women have been told that their primary role is to serve and support men, to fulfill the desires and expectations of the male gaze. This constant subjugation has resulted in women internalizing their own oppression, leading them to believe that their worth is contingent upon the approval of men. The idea that a woman's existence is mediated by man is not simply a reflection of societal norms, but a deeply ingrained belief that has been perpetuated through generations. This belief has been reinforced through various social institutions, such as marriage, religion, and the media, all of which have served to uphold the patriarchal structure of society. It is only by challenging and dismantling these structures of power and oppression that women can truly liberate themselves from the constraints of a male-dominated world. By asserting their own agency and reclaiming their autonomy, women can begin to redefine their existence on their own terms, free from the constraints of male validation.
