The fact is that the average man's love of personal liberty and his desire to be free from the interference of government with his life are not primarily due to deep thought or to an intelligent understanding of the needs of society. They are due to the instinctive hatred of being bullied and of seeing others bullied. This is the feeling that has brought me to the coal-miners, and it is upon this that the whole spirit of socialism is founded. Socialism is not a mere political doctrine, but a way of life, a way of looking at the world. It is a protest against the injustices of the existing social order, against the tyranny of the strong over the weak, the rich over the poor, the employer over the employee. Socialism is not a dream of a utopia where all men will be equal, where there will be no more poverty or want or suffering. It is a practical means of securing for every man, woman, and child in the community the opportunity to live a decent, healthy, and happy life. It is a demand for social justice, for the right of every individual to a fair share of the good things of life.
