Middle class attitudes are condescending from "summary" of The Road To Wigan Pier by George Orwell
In the world of the middle class, there exists a certain smugness that permeates their interactions with the working class. This condescension is a byproduct of their privileged position in society, a position that allows them to look down upon those who are less fortunate. The middle class often views the working class with a sense of superiority, as if they are somehow inferior because of their socio-economic status. This attitude of condescension is evident in the way the middle class interacts with the working class. They do not see them as equals, but rather as objects of pity or even scorn. The middle class often assumes that they know what is best for the working class, that they are somehow more enlightened and educated and therefore better equipped to make decisions on their behalf. This condescension is also reflected in the language that the middle class uses to describe the working class. They often paint them as lazy, ignorant, and morally bankrupt, failing to recognize the systemic barriers that prevent many working-class individuals from improving their circumstances. This language serves to distance the middle class from the working class, reinforcing their sense of superiority. In many ways, this condescension is a defense mechanism for the middle class. By dehumanizing the working class, they are able to justify their own privilege and avoid confronting the uncomfortable realities of inequality. It allows them to maintain their comfortable existence without having to acknowledge the suffering of those less fortunate.- This attitude of condescension serves to perpetuate the divide between the middle class and the working class, making it difficult for meaningful dialogue and understanding to take place. Until the middle class is able to recognize and confront their own biases and prejudices, this divide will continue to widen, to the detriment of society as a whole.
