The Road to Serfdom begins with the dangers of centralized planning from "summary" of The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich August Hayek

Centralized planning, with its promise of efficiency and order, may seem like an attractive solution to the complexities of modern society. However, the dangers of this approach are far-reaching and insidious. As power becomes concentrated in the hands of a few planners, individual freedom is inevitably eroded. The belief that a group of experts can effectively plan and control all aspects of society is a grave misconception. Such centralized planning requires a level of knowledge that is simply unattainable. The information necessary to make informed decisions is dispersed among countless individuals, each with their own unique knowledge and preferences. Attempting to centralize this information leads to a distortion of reality. Planners may believe they have a comprehensive understanding of society, but in reality, they are operating with incomplete and often inaccurate information. This lack of knowledge inevitably leads to poor decision-making and unintended consequences. Furthermore, the concentration of power in the hands of planners creates a fertile ground for abuse. When a small group of individuals wields unchecked authority, the potential for corruption and tyranny is ever-present. The erosion of individual freedoms is a natural consequence of centralized planning, as personal autonomy is sacrificed in the name of collective order. In the end, the road to serfdom begins with the seductive allure of centralized planning. While it may promise efficiency and control, the reality is quite different. As power is concentrated and individual freedoms are eroded, society moves further down a dangerous path towards servitude. Only by recognizing the dangers of centralized planning can we hope to preserve the freedoms that are essential to a thriving society.
