Collectivism undermines personal responsibility from "summary" of The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich August Hayek
The belief in collectivism, the idea that individuals should subjugate their own interests to the greater good of society, goes hand in hand with the erosion of personal responsibility. When individuals are no longer held accountable for their actions and decisions, when the state assumes the role of provider and protector, the very essence of personal responsibility is undermined. In a collectivist society, individuals are encouraged to rely on the state for their well-being rather than taking responsibility for their own lives. They become dependent on government handouts and regulations, relinquishing their autonomy and agency in the process. Trust and cooperation break down, as individuals become more concerned with their own self-interests and less with the common good. In the end, collectivism undermines personal responsibility by promoting dependence on the state, centralizing power in the hands of a few, and fostering a culture of entitlement and victimhood. As Hayek argues, a society that values personal responsibility is essential for preserving individual freedom and the prosperity of all its members.
