Centralized planning leads to loss of individual freedom from "summary" of The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich August Hayek
Centralized planning, by its very nature, requires a high degree of control and coordination from a central authority. This authority must make decisions on behalf of the individuals within the society, determining what is produced, how it is distributed, and who receives what. In order to enforce these decisions, the central authority must have the power to restrict the freedom of individuals to make their own choices. This leads to a loss of individual freedom, as individuals are no longer able to act according to their own preferences and desires. As centralized planning expands, the scope of individual decision-making shrinks. The central authority takes on more and more responsibilities, leaving less room for individual initiative. This not only restricts the freedom of individuals to make choices in their own lives but also diminishes their ability to innovate and adapt to changing circumstances. When decisions are made at the top and enforced through a system of rules and regulations, individuals lose the flexibility to respond to new information and adjust their behavior accordingly. Furthermore, the concentration of power in the hands of a central authority creates opportunities for abuse and corruption. Those in positions of authority may be tempted to use their power for personal gain or to suppress dissenting views. This can lead to a further erosion of individual freedom, as individuals are forced to conform to the dictates of the ruling elite or face punishment. In a centrally planned system, individuals are reduced to mere cogs in a machine, expected to follow orders without question. Their own preferences and interests are subordinated to the needs of the collective, as determined by the central authority. This not only diminishes the dignity and autonomy of individuals but also stifles the diversity and creativity that arise from allowing individuals to pursue their own goals and aspirations. In summary, centralized planning inevitably leads to a loss of individual freedom. By concentrating power in the hands of a central authority, individuals are deprived of the ability to make choices for themselves, innovate and adapt to changing circumstances, and exercise their own judgment. This not only diminishes the quality of life for individuals but also undermines the principles of liberty and democracy on which a free society depends.
