Harsh realities of humanity from "summary" of The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The man knew that the world he walked through was a place stripped of all goodness, where kindness was a rarity and selfishness thrived. Every person he encountered seemed driven by desperation, willing to do whatever it took to survive. They stole from each other, betrayed trust, and showed no regard for human life. The man saw how easily people could turn on each other when faced with scarcity, how quickly they could shed their humanity in the name of self-preservation. As he journeyed with his son, the man tried to shield the boy from the worst of it, but he knew that he couldn't protect him from the harsh realities of their existence. He had seen too much to believe in the inherent goodness of humanity, too many acts of cruelty and violence to have faith in the decency of his fellow man. And yet, despite it all, he still clung to a flicker of hope, a belief that somewhere out there, someone was still capable of compassion and kindness.
