The role of women in a patriarchal society from "summary" of The Rice Mother by Rani Manicka

In the world of The Rice Mother, women are expected to fulfill certain roles within a patriarchal society. They are seen as the caretakers of the family, responsible for managing the household and raising the children. These expectations are deeply ingrained in the cultural norms of the time, and women are often judged based on their ability to fulfill these roles. Throughout the novel, we see examples of women who struggle to meet these expectations. Rajeswari, the protagonist, faces pressure from her husband and in-laws to produce a male heir, despite her difficulties with childbirth. She is constantly reminded of her duty to her family, and her worth is often measured by her ability to bear children. Similarly, Rajeswari's daughters-in-law are expected to be submissive and obedient, following the orders of their husbands and elders without question. They are not allowed to speak out or express their own desires, as their role is to support and serve their husbands and in-laws. Even Rajeswari's own mother, Nan, is forced to conform to societal expectations of women. Despite her intelligence and creativity, she is limited by her gender and finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage, unable to pursue her own dreams.
