Nature of Experience from "summary" of The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell
The world of our experience is a world of appearances. It is a world of colours, sounds, textures, and other sensory qualities. These qualities are not inherent in the objects themselves but are dependent on our perception of them. For example, the colour of an object is not a property of the object itself but is a result of the way light interacts with the object and how our eyes perceive that interaction. Our experience of the world is also influenced by our mental state. For example, a person who is in a bad mood may perceive the world differently than a person who is in a good mood. Our past experiences, beliefs, and attitudes also shape how we perceive the world. This means that our experience of the world is subjective and can vary from person to person. Despite the subjective nature of our experience, there are certain regularities and patterns that we can observe. For example, objects tend to have certain properties that we can reliably perceive. These properties, such as shape, size, and weight, are independent of our perception of them. They exist in the world regardless of whether we perceive them or not. Our experience of the world is also structured in a certain way. We perceive objects as having a certain spatial and temporal relationship to each other. This allows us to navigate the world and make sense of our surroundings. Although our experience of the world is subjective and influenced by our mental state, there are certain objective qualities that we can observe and study.- The nature of our experience is complex and multifaceted. It is shaped by our perception, mental state, past experiences, beliefs, and attitudes. Despite its subjective nature, there are certain regularities and patterns that we can observe. By studying the nature of our experience, we can gain a better understanding of how we perceive the world and how our perceptions shape our understanding of reality.
