The line between love and obsession can blur from "summary" of The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy

It is a peculiar thing, the way love can transform into something darker, more consuming. In my experience, it seems that the line between love and obsession is not always clear-cut. It can blur, like a watercolor painting left out in the rain, the colors bleeding into one another until they are indistinguishable. I have seen this phenomenon play out in the lives of those closest to me, particularly in the relationship between my sister Savannah and her husband, Tom. At first, their love was passionate and all-consuming, like a wildfire raging out of control. But as time went on, I began to notice subtle shifts in their dynamic. Tom's affection for Savannah started to border on possessiveness, his desire to control every aspect of her life becoming more pronounced. It was as if he could not bear the thought of her slipping away from him, of losing the object of his affection. And so, his love twisted into something darker, something that began to suffocate rather than nurture. It was a slow and insidious process, one that crept up on them both until they found themselves trapped in a web of their own making. I watched helplessly as their relationship spiraled out of control, as the line between love and obsession blurred beyond recognition. It was a heartbreaking sight, to see two people who once loved each other so deeply now locked in a toxic dance of codependency and manipulation. And so, I learned that love is a delicate thing, a fragile flower that must be nurtured and tended to with care. When it is allowed to grow unchecked, when it is allowed to morph into something darker and more sinister, it can become a force of destruction rather than creation. The line between love and obsession is indeed a thin one, a tightrope that must be walked with caution and mindfulness.
