Selfimposed servitude empowers tyrants from "summary" of The Politics of Obedience and Étienne de La Boétie by Estienne de La Boétie,Paul Bonnefon

The idea that individuals willingly submit themselves to the authority of tyrants may seem perplexing at first glance. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that this self-imposed servitude is a crucial factor in the empowerment of tyrants. The dynamic between the ruler and the ruled is not solely dependent on the oppressive actions of the former, but rather on the voluntary compliance of the latter. The tyrant, by nature, seeks power and control over others. Yet, without the consent and obedience of the people, the tyrant's authority would crumble. It is through the acquiescence and submission of the populace that tyrants are able to maintain their oppressive rule. This voluntary servitude is a form of consent that legitimizes the tyrant's reign and bolsters their power. The populace, in their obedience to the tyrant, inadvertently empower them to exert even greater control. By complying with unjust laws and oppressive measures, individuals contribute to the consolidation of the tyrant's authority. This cycle of obedience and subjugation perpetuates the tyrant's dominance, further entrenching their rule. Furthermore, the fear and apathy that often accompany self-imposed servitude serve to reinforce the tyrant's power. When individuals passively accept their subjugation, they create a fertile ground for tyranny to flourish. By relinquishing their agency and autonomy, they enable the tyrant to expand their influence and suppress dissent.
  1. Self-imposed servitude is a double-edged sword that both sustains and strengthens tyrants. The complicity of the populace in their own oppression is a key component in the perpetuation of tyrannical regimes. Only by recognizing the insidious nature of voluntary submission can individuals begin to challenge and dismantle the structures of tyranny that rely on their compliance.
